How We Assess Compatibility
What "compatible" actually means.
SnoozyScoop® replaces counting multiple scoops with one pre-sized scoop. For this to be accurate, the weight of powder each brand's scoop delivers per 30ml of water must be close to our 4.5g calibration — and the resulting osmolality must remain within safe limits.
We check scoop weight
Each formula brand publishes the weight of one level scoop (in grams) on their packaging. We record this directly from manufacturer specifications and on-pack data. Scoop weights can differ between stages of the same brand.
We predict osmolality
Using each brand's published base osmolality and the variance between their scoop weight and our 4.5g calibration, we calculate the predicted osmolality of a feed made with SnoozyScoop® — and compare it against the UK/EU safe limit of 400 mOsm/kg.
We assign a status
Brands within ±5% scoop variance and a predicted osmolality under 400 mOsm/kg are marked Compatible. Brands between ±5–10% or requiring verification are marked Check Your Tin. Anything outside this range or not fully assessed is marked Not Recommended.
Why osmolality matters
Safety isn't just about scoop weight.
Osmolality measures how concentrated a feed is. Formula that is too concentrated — because too much powder is used per volume of water — can place excessive strain on a baby's kidneys, which are immature and unable to excrete concentrated urine efficiently.
UK and EU guidelines set the safe upper limit at 400 mOsm/kg. The American Academy of Pediatrics recognises an absolute ceiling of 450 mOsm/kg. All feeds prepared with SnoozyScoop® across our four tested brands (Aptamil, Cow & Gate, HiPP, Kendamil) produced results well below 400 mOsm/kg in physical calibration testing.
For brands we have not physically tested, we use published base osmolality data combined with the scoop weight variance to calculate a predicted maximum osmolality. These predictions are conservative — they assume the full variance is additive.

Always check your tin first
Confirm your brand and stage is on this compatibility list before use. Stage 2 follow-on formulas can have different scoop weights to Stage 1 — even within the same brand. If your product isn't listed, email us and we'll assess it.
A level scoop matters
SnoozyScoop® relies on a level, unpacked scoop — exactly as your formula manufacturer instructs. Heaping or pressing the powder will affect the dose and osmolality.
- Fill to the rim without pressing down
- Level the powder with a straight, flat edge until it is flush with the rim
- Never compact or shake the powder in
Water temperature still applies
The UK NHS recommends using water that has been boiled and cooled to no less than 70°C to kill any bacteria present in powdered formula. SnoozyScoop® does not change this guidance.
Not for specialist or prescription formula
If your baby is on a prescribed, hydrolysed, anti-reflux, comfort, or any other specialist formula, do not use SnoozyScoop® without explicit advice from your healthcare professional. These products have specific preparation requirements.

My brand isn't on this list. Can I still use SnoozyScoop®?
If your brand isn't listed, we'd rather you wait. Email us at [email protected] with your brand name, stage, and the scoop weight on your tin and we'll assess it and add it to the guide. Your baby's safety comes first.
Why does Cow & Gate Stage 2 have a different status to Stage 1?
Cow & Gate's Stage 1 First Infant Milk uses a 4.5g scoop — an exact match to SnoozyScoop®'s calibration. However, their Stage 2 Follow-On Milk uses a 4.8g scoop. While the predicted osmolality remains within the safe range, the 6.7% variance sits in our "Check your tin" band. We recommend verifying the scoop weight stated on your current tin before using SnoozyScoop® with Cow & Gate Stage 2.
Does the formula stage affect compatibility? Should I check Stage 2 separately?
Yes — and this is important. Scoop weights can change between stages even within the same brand. We have confirmed:
- Aptamil: 4.6g at both Stage 1 and Stage 2 — consistent
- Cow & Gate: 4.5g at Stage 1, but 4.8g at Stage 2 — changes
- SMA Advanced: 4.4g at Stage 1, 4.6g at Stage 2 — changes
- Kendamil: 4.3g at Stage 1 and Stage 2 — consistent
- NANNYcare: 4.3g at Stage 1 and Stage 2 — consistent
Always check the scoop weight on your current tin before use, especially when switching stages.
What is osmolality and why does it matter for SnoozyScoop®?
Osmolality is a measure of how concentrated a feed is — how many dissolved particles are present per kilogram of liquid. Formula that is too concentrated can place excessive strain on a baby's developing kidneys. The UK/EU safe upper limit is 400 mOsm/kg. In our physical testing across four brands and all seven SnoozyScoop® sizes, every result was safe — the closest to the limit was 356 mOsm/kg (Aptamil Size 3), leaving 44 mOsm/kg of headroom.
HiPP Organic UK uses a 4.3g scoop — but the old version of this page said 4.7g. Which is right?
4.3g is correct for the current UK HiPP Organic Combiotic First Infant Milk. This has been verified from multiple UK retailer listings, the HiPP UK preparation instructions, and our own physical calibration testing. The previous version of this page contained an error — this has been corrected. As always, confirm the scoop weight on your tin before use.
What about goat milk formulas — are they compatible?
Both Kendamil Goat and NANNYcare use a 4.3g scoop — identical to the cow's milk variants of those brands, and well within our compatible range. The predicted osmolality for goat formula at this scoop weight is estimated at or below 318 mOsm/kg, which is safely within the 400 mOsm/kg UK/EU limit. These have been assessed as compatible. Kabrita Gold (a goat formula less commonly stocked in major UK retailers) has not been independently assessed — check the scoop weight on your tin.
What about supermarket own-brand formula beyond Mamia?
We have assessed Aldi Mamia (4.3g — compatible). Sainsbury's Little Ones and Tesco own-brand have not yet been fully assessed and are not on this list. If you use one of these, please email us with the scoop weight from your tin and we'll add it. Do not assume compatibility until confirmed.
